Rural Electrification

V3 Power is part of the professional body Wind Empowerment that is an association for the development of locally built small wind turbines for sustainable rural electrification. This brings together many groups working with the Piggott axial-flux wind turbine and serves as a hub to develop the design and share experience and develop best practice.

Due to its ability to be manufactured locally the Piggott axial-flux wind turbine is able play a unique role in rural electrification. Studies have shown that local manufacture of turbines leads to the development of supply chains and a skills base in rural communities that would otherwise not occur with the use of remotely manufactured technology. This has specific social and environmental benefits that are very exciting when looked at in a rural electrification setting.

In 2007 V3 was involved in the setting up of an organisation in Tamil Nadu, India to construct small wind turbines. Two turbines were built under the supervision of V3 trainers that were then installed. This left the local group with the skills to go on and construct and install further turbines that have been installed in the region.
