We were invited down to the Falmouth campus of Exeter University to build a turbine with their 4th year renewable energy engineering students. Over 4 days the team built a 1.8m turbine on an 8m tower and wired a direct heating electrical system – based on an LDR 48-30. We also installed an anemometer at 7m for wiring to a raspberry pi based logging system which the students hope to install over the next few months. The course was held in the Cambourne School of Mines which was a bizarre setting as we were surrounded by machines for crushing and sorting (amongst other things) fossil fuels!
