In January this year we partnered with Wind Empowerment and Nea Guinea to run a wind turbine construction course and installation in the Somali region of Ethiopia. We built an 800W turbine with 20 students at Jijiga Polytechnic college and installed it on a 12m tower with 300W of solar PV in Hadow, a rural village North of Jijiga. The hybrid system fed batteries which provided lights, phone charging and refrigeration for a local shop. We also installed low cost dataloggers to monitor the wind speed and use of power which will help inform a larger research project run by Wind Empowerment to determine if the Hugh Piggott turbines are suitable for Ethiopia.
