Bicycle Generator Workshops
Over the years we've build a host of different human-powered generators which range in both efficiency and safety! Many of these involved welding bits of scrap metal to support the rear wheel of a bicycle off the ground and the use of a reclaimed motor for the alternator.
During our workshops we don't use any welding but instead use Matt Little's fantastic design for a D.I.Y. training stand.
In order to deliver it as a workshop we've had to make a few sustainability compromises and, rather than using reclaimed parts, we buy in electric scooter motors to act as generators and buy in new lengths of virgin steel rather than using scrap. This means the total cost of parts to build a generator (including electrical system and small battery) is £130.
A typical workshop takes 10 hours although this can be split up into smaller sessions. The cost per learner depends on number of people attending the course and how many generators are being built.
